Over 20% of the patients we see, both surgical and nonsurgical, are men. Surprised? Most people are. But men want to feel good about how they look too. Like women, they want trimmer waists and fewer wrinkles.
It’s a fact; men have a new attitude about skin care and plastic surgery.
Some men have been unhappy with a certain part of their body all of their lives and are becoming aware of what can be accomplished under the care of a board-certified plastic surgeon. Others watch parts of their body change as they get older and decide to do something about it. Some are concerned their necks no longer look good in a dress shirt. Many want to get rid of the weight that accumulates in the abdomen and hip rolls. Others target the “droopy” look around their eyes.
One trend we have really enjoyed this year is the number of married couples who become patients. Often men are impressed with the great results of their wife’s Botox and Juvederm treatments and schedule a consultation. Just as many times, the men go first and the wives want to keep up with their young-looking guys.
Of concern to almost every man who comes to see us is down time. If you are a man considering surgery, recovery can be easier than you might expect. Men retain their skin elasticity longer, bruise less easily and the areas of fat beneath the skin tend to be firmer than those in women.

Top Three Surgeries for Men:
Liposuction of hip rolls, abdomen and neck- If you have areas of your body that are out of proportion to the rest of your body, and these areas won’t go away even when you are working out, liposuction may be your answer. Liposuction is the most popular surgical procedure for men for good reason. The recovery time is not as long as you might think. Sometimes it is the only way to get rid of fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise.
Eyelid Surgery- Heredity as well as the aging process affects the appearance of the eyes. Eyelid surgery corrects drooping upper lids and puffy bags under the eyes. These are the features that make men look older and more tired than they feel, and sometimes even interfere with their vision.
Breast Reduction for Men to correct Gynecomastia- Gynecomastia, or enlargement of the male breast area, is a condition that is rarely talked about, though it's actually quite common. Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. It may affect only one breast or both. Dr. Reath uses liposuction to remove fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases excess skin is also removed, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.
Here are a few of Dr. Reath's patients:
Before & After Liposuction: This is a 31-year-old man who was concerned about Gynecomastia (male enlarged breasts) and fat in his abdomen and hip rolls. Despite an aggressive exercise regimen, these areas refused to budge. Dr. Reath performed liposuction on his chest and abdomen with these excellent results.
Before & After Liposuction: This high-school senior had been self-conscious about his enlarged breasts(gynecomastia)for four long years when he came to our office. Dr. Reath used ultrasound assisted liposuction to remove the fatty tissue surrounding his breasts and he is relieved and happy with his new chest.
Before & After Liposuction: This patient is a teenaged male who was troubled by breast development on his chest, known as Gynecomastia. This created problems for him in terms of dealing with his classmates. Dr. Reath used liposuction to treat this area. The patient is happy and feels the results have improved his overall confidence.
Runners Up:
Facelift- A third of our facelift patients are men who want to reverse the laxity in their skin caused by gravity and aging. The areas most improved are the jaw, the neck and the fold from the nose to the side of the mouth (nasolabial fold).
Rhinoplasty (Surgery of the Nose)- Whether they are dissatisfied with the way their nose naturally developed or they injured it playing sports, men find that a rhinoplasty can help reshape the nose to look and work better.
Otoplasty (Surgery to Correct Protruding Ears)- After this surgery, most men tell us they wished they had done sooner to avoid all the teasing
Male Breast Reduction Podcast
Gynecomastia is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men — often causes emotional discomfort and can impair self-confidence. Some men even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.
Advances in plastic surgery techniques allow for correction of gynecomastia through a procedure that reduces breast size and flattens and enhances the chest contours. Nearly 20,000 male breast reduction procedures were performed in 2006.
This procedure is a good option for patients who:
-
Are physically healthy and of relatively normal weight
-
Have realistic expectations
-
Are not experiencing further breast development
-
Are bothered by the feeling that their breasts are too large
In this podcast, listeners will hear an ASPS member surgeon discussing the causes of gynecomastia and courses of treatment, as well as his patient, Matthew, describing how he coped with his condition before surgery and his post-surgical outlook on life.

Botox- ("Boytox" as we fondly call it) This is a great procedure that is super-popular for men because they get real results and don’t have to take any time off. A brief, free injectable consultation with Dr. Reath will help you better understand what to expect. Furrowed brows, wrinkled foreheads and crow’s feet can all be corrected in about ten minutes. Removing the lines in these areas can go a long way toward a younger and more relaxed look at work.
Botox has many other medical uses besides wrinkle-reduction. One of the most helpful is for controlling Hyperhidrosis, a medical condition in which a person sweats excessively and unpredictably. People with hyperhidrosis may sweat even when the temperature is cool or when they are at rest. Many people who suffer from Hyperhidrosis tell us that they get nervous because they sweat, then sweat more because they are nervous. It affects both men and women.
Botox can be a life-changing, temporary treatment for those suffering from severe underarm sweating. It is FDA-approved for the treatment primary axillary hyperhidrosis. Small doses are injected into the underarm areas to temporarily block the nerves that stimulate sweating. It lasts from 7 to 9 months. Nurse Injector Jill Maze will tell you that these are some of her happiest patients.
Injectable fillers- Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm are becoming as popular as Botox for men because of the areas that can be treated with little or no recovery time. Men seem to get especially good results from the new Under Eye Contouring with Fillers because they often are troubled with more pronounced hollows under the eyes. Because hyaluronic acid fillers are so easy to mold, they are used for creases in the ears, chin area and acne scars. The fold from the nose to the side of the mouth (nasolabial fold) can be filled in with Juvederm as well as the lines on the forehead and frown area. This is most effective when used in conjunction with Botox to eliminate the movements that cause these lines.
Below is a 40-year-old man lifting his eyebrows before and after his Botox procedure on his forehead. He said it made him look 5 years younger.
Laser Hair Removal
Great for: all skin types
Not for: Blonde, white, red or grey hair
Our advanced Cutera Laser uses a sophisticated light energy source for permanent hair reduction. The light is absorbed by the pigment in your hair, which effectively disables the hair follicle. It's CoolGlide technology is considered the gold standard in the laser industry because of its long history of safety and effectiveness on all skin types—even on tanned skin, which is a nice benefit to our patients in the summer months. We can treat not only coarse hair but fine hair as well. It is permanent, safe and effective. The CoolGlide can remove hair from the face or body; for example, the arms, underarms, legs, backs, and even particularly sensitive areas like the upper lip.
It is sometimes hard to tell how many treatments you might need in advance. Hair develops in phases and we can only treat hair in its active, visible stage. Therefore, the number of treatments depends on how quickly the untreated hairs appear. For significant clearance, most patients require a course of four to six treatments, which are spaced at least six to eight weeks apart.
Patients will feel a series of short snaps, somewhat like a rubber band snapping, but no local anesthesia or pain medication is necessary. Sensitivity varies from person to person, and we have a topical blocker that works quite well. Treatment times vary depending, of course, on the size of the area, but it typically takes 60 minutes to treat the upper and lower legs and 45 minutes for a man’s back. Underarms for women are fast.
The beauty of the CoolGlide technology is that it effectively destroys the hair itself without harming the surrounding skin. You may be a little red afterward, but that typically goes away in a matter of hours. We ask that you shave beforehand since the treatment is targeting the hair follicle itself – not just hair.
Everyone asks. Yes, it is totally permanent. The hair we treat with CoolGlide will not grow back, and patients can expect an 85 percent reduction in hair after four to six treatments. As we age our hair patterns change, so this does not prevent the possibility of new hair growth over the years.
