Rhinoplasty (Surgery of the Nose)
 

Many people are unhappy with the shape of their nose. Some are dissatisfied because of the way their nose naturally developed, and, for others, injuries may have altered the normal appearance of their nose. In either case, surgery of the nose (Rhinoplasty) can help reshape the nose to a more pleasing appearance.

Rhinoplasty will alter the shape of the nose by changing the size, shape, and position of the cartilages that give shape to the nose. Dr. Reath usually uses a delicate incision across the part of the nose between the nostrils (the columella).

Before and After: This is a 32 year old patient who had concerns regarding her nose. She had broken her nose in the past and had some mild airway obstruction.  She also had concerns regarding the dorsal hump and the width at the base of the nose.  She had a rhinoplasty and is now happy with the appearance and shape of her nose.

Before & After (Rhinoplasty): This is a 42-year-old who had always felt that her nose was out of proportion to the rest of her face. Dr. Reath performed a Rhinoplasty to treat the dorsal aspect of her nose and modify her tip projection (which is medical speak for making her nose pretty and she is thrilled!)

The Operation

Most patients prefer to be asleep for the operation, which is done as an out-patient or day surgery operation. The procedure will take around 2 hours. At the end of the operation, the patient will have a splint on their nose to protect and maintain the new position of the nose.

Recovery

Helping our patients manage a speedy recovery is one of our primary missions. Expect a certain amount of swelling immediately after the surgery. The splint will usually be worn for the better part of a week, and the sutures in the columella will be removed in 5 to 6 days. Most people are able to return to their normal activities in about a week, although it will be longer until they can do strenuous activities.
