Eyelid Surgery

The appearance of the eyes is affected both by heredity and the aging process (gravity again!). Knoxville Plastic Surgeon Dr. David Reath uses eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, to correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags under the eyes. These are the features that make people look older and more tired than they feel, and sometimes even interfere with their vision.

People can choose to simply repair their upper eyelids only, lower eyelids only or all four lids at a time.

During upper eyelid blephoroplasty, a delicate incision is made in the natural crease above the eye and excess skin is removed. For the lower lids, excess skin and fat pockets are removed by a tiny incision in the eyelash region.

Browlift vs Blepharoplasty - which is best for sagging eyelids?

Many people who are concerned about excess skin in their upper eye area are surprised to find out that a browlift is indicated rather than eyelid surgery, (also known as blepharoplasty.) This is because the skin that is hooding the upper eyelid is raised as the brow is repositioned during a brow lift.

Browlift and blepharoplasty are complimentary procedures for eyelid area improvement. Deciding whether to have a browlift, blepharoplasty, or a combination of both is a very individual decision that involves your particular anatomy, your aesthetic sense, and the artistry of your surgeon.

If you have noticed that your eye shadow is becoming harder to see or you have the sensation that your eyelid skin rests on your eyelashes, your excess skin is treated by an eyelid lift.

Skin excess and hooding occurring in the crow's feet area outside the outer corner of the eye (lateral canthus) is often better managed with a brow/forehead lift.

A good idea is to review pictures from decades ago and notice how your brow has moved over the years. In some people the brow has slowly descended over time.  If so, you are more likely to benefit from a browlift.  On the other hand, you may have always had a lower brow. If that is the case, a browlift is might give you an outcome that appears unnatural to you.

Before & After Upper Lid Bleph: Here is a 56-year-old woman who said she was bothered by the "fullness" in her upper eyelids. She explained that it was starting to interfere with her peripheral vision and felt that it make her look older than her age. You can see what a natural-looking difference an upper lid blepharoplasty makes in her appearance. She said her vision improved too.

Before & After Upper and Lower Lid Bleph: This patient is a 54-year-old female who is concerned about the excessive skin of her eyelids. Dr. Reath performed an upper and lower blepharoplasty and removed the excess skin giving her the more youthful look pictured here.

Dr. Reath performed a upper and lower lid blepharoplasty and an endoscopic brow lift. After his surgery he told us that his children remarked they didn't know that he had such pretty eyes.

The Operation

The operation can be done under local anesthesia with sedation, or under a general anesthetic on an outpatient bases. It is frequently combined with other facial procedures such as a facelift or forehead lift. Once patients have recovered from the anesthetic, they go home in the care of their family.

Recovery

Helping our patients manage a speedy recovery is one of our primary missions. The recovery period is usually 7 to 10 days. Expect to be able to read and watch TV after two or three days and have stitches removed less than a week after surgery. Once the stitches are removed, eye makeup can be used.

If you are considering eyelid surgery and have questions you would like answered, click on Ask Dr. Reath and Dr. Reath will personally answer your email.
