Facelifts Personalized-

Gravity is not kind to any of us! One of the areas we see the effect of gravity and the environment the most, is in the face. This can give us an old or tired look. This is the major concern of people considering facelifts. A well-done facelift restores the normal youthful appearance to the face while avoiding that unnatural "over stretched" look.

With many so many new miracle lifting procedures being advertised on television, it is important not to get sidetracked by marketing terms. The facelift is the most personalized aesthetic surgery procedure Dr. Reath performs. One size does not fit all, especially in the area of facial rejuvenation.

Many people ask us about "mini" facelifts or  procedures they have seen or read about. They tell us they don't feel ready to have a full facelift. We understand completely.

Here is what you need to keep in mind as you are doing your research.

  • An accomplished board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Reath will modify his technique to treat your face, rather than the other way around. Different people have various levels of skin laxity and different degrees of the descent of cheek fat into the jowl and/or naso-labial area. You may have skin looseness in both the jaw line and the neck, but maybe you only have one or the other. It is the amount of skin laxity and the descent of your underlying fat and tissue that determines how much needs to be done. The bottom line: the way your face ages is as unique to you as your face itself.

A facelift changes the actual shape of your face by manipulating the tissue underneath to restore a more youthful appearance. It is not about pulling on the skin. This area, more than any other, requires true artistry as well as surgical technique. It is very difficult to achieve real and lasting rejuvenation with a procedure that takes less than an hour and promises no recovery time. When you schedule a facelift with Dr. Reath, you can be assured that you will be his first and only facelift patient that day.

Browlifts

A Browlift is a surgical procedure that repositions a low or sagging brow and raises the eyebrows to a more alert and youthful position. It minimizes the creases that develop across the forehead, and those that occur high on the bridge of the nose, between the eyes. It also improves what are commonly referred to as frown lines, vertical creases in the glabellar area that develop between the eyebrows. A brow lift is most commonly performed in conjunction with upper eyelid surgery and/or a facelift.

Browlift vs Blepharoplasty - which is best for sagging eyelids?

Many people who are concerned about excess skin in their upper eye area are surprised to find out that a browlift is indicated rather than eyelid surgery, (also known as blepharoplasty.) This is because the skin that is hooding the upper eyelid is raised as the brow is repositioned during a brow lift.

Browlift and blepharoplasty are complimentary procedures for eyelid area improvement. Deciding whether to have a browlift, blepharoplasty, or a combination of both is a very individual decision that involves your particular anatomy, your aesthetic sense, and the artistry of your surgeon.

If you have noticed that your eye shadow is becoming harder to see or you have the sensation that your eyelid skin rests on your eyelashes, your excess skin is treated by an eyelid lift.

Skin excess and hooding occurring in the crow's feet area outside the outer corner of the eye (lateral canthus) is often better managed with a brow/forehead lift.

A good idea is to review pictures from decades ago and notice how your brow has moved over the years. In some people the brow has slowly descended over time.  If so, you are more likely to benefit from a browlift.  On the other hand, you may have always had a lower brow. If that is the case, a browlift is might give you an outcome that appears unnatural to you.

Make the most of your facelift-

To achieve the most benefit from a facelift, good skincare is essential. That's why we include a package of skincare products individually designed by Licensed Aesthetician Heather McNeal for all of our facelift patients.

Many of our facelift patients, both men and women, are now consulting with Nurse Injector Jill Maze before or after their surgery to improve the areas not treated by a facelift. Treating lines and wrinkles in the brow area and forehead as well as restoring youthful fullness to the lips compliments the results of a facelift. Combining a facelift with Botox and Juvederm completes your youthful new look.

Before and After: This was a 58 year old patient who presented to Dr. Reath with concerns in terms of facial aging. She had concerns with nasal labial folds, upper and lower lids, and brow ptosis.  Dr. Reath performed a facelift, upper and lower blepharoplasty and an endo brow lift.  The patient looks naturally refreshed and is very happy with her results!

Before and After: This patient is 67 years old. She came to Dr. Reath with concerns about facial aging. She was particularly concerned about her "droopy upper eyelids". Here she is afterward looking happy and wide awake after her facelift and upper lid blepharoplasty.

The Operation

Today's facelifts are done as out-patient procedures and do not involve an overnight stay in the hospital. The operation takes between 3 and 4 hours. Many people like to combine a facelift with other procedures such as eyelid surgery, a forehead lift and nose surgery (rhinoplasty). Once patients have recovered from the anesthetic, they go home in the care of their family.

Recovery

Helping our patients manage a speedy recovery is one of our primary missions. Most people take off between ten days to two weeks of work after their facelift. Expect to be up and about in a day or two, and have the stitches removed in less than a week.

About Procedures on T.V.

Many of you have questions about procedures advertised on television promising  results with no downtime. Here are some things to think about before you decide to proceed with any plastic surgery procedure.

  1. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

  2. If something is that good, all the legitimate board-certified plastic surgeons will offer it.

  3. Really scrutinize the before and after photos. Look at the fine print. Are these results just from this one procedure or did it take several different procedures to achieve this result?

If you are considering a facelift and have questions you would like answered, click on Ask Dr. Reath and Dr. Reath will personally answer your email.
