Many people assume that plastic surgeons only focus on cosmetic procedures like breast augmentation and liposuction.
The reality is that Dr. Reath, along with other members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, performs a large amount of surgeries that are reconstructive in nature. A reconstructive procedure corrects a problem that is the result of injury, illness or a birth defect.
Dr. Reath is particularly passionate about treating children for repair of cleft lip and palate and other deformities. In addition, he helps children with injuries that are the results of accidents and dog-bites, which are more common than you might expect.

Dr. Reath is a nationally recognized expert on lower limb reconstruction (usually the result of trauma) and was appointed to an elite group of trauma surgeons who help determine public policy on injury prevention, The Committee on Trauma. He was the only plastic surgeon in the US to be invited to lecture at the Pan American Trauma Congress in Venezuela in November 1999.
Because of his extensive work on the breast, he is on the forefront of using new techniques for reconstruction with women who have had breast cancer. He also reconstructs other areas of the body, which have been affected by cancer.

Patient of Courage: Scott Rigsby
In 1986, 18-year-old Scott Rigsby was thrown from the back of a pickup truck and dragged over 300 feet under a flat bed trailer, suffering severe damage to both legs. His right leg was amputated that day.
Over the next dozen years, he underwent 26 reconstructive plastic surgery procedures on his left leg, but ultimately he elected to have his left leg amputated. From that moment, Scott has never looked back.
Listeners will hear this courageous story from Scott himself, as well as the ASPS member surgeon who cared for Scott over the years.
On October 13, 2007, Scott became the first below-the-knee double amputee to complete an Ironman competition (2.4 mile swim; 112 mile bike; 26.2 mile run) at the Hawaiian Ironman. ASPS salutes this Patient of Courage for his accomplishments and inspiration to others.
